Training boules

Ray has a good point. Depending upon the terrain and your particular role in the game (pointer/shooter OR BOTH!) your boule choice should vary. I wouldn't vary as much as using an 800 gram 71mm boule one day, and then a 650 gram 80mm boule the next - so if you do have multiple sets of boules - probably keeping the weights/sizes similar is best.

That said, the idea of using a heavier boule in the winter practice season switching to lighter boules for shooting in the summer is un-tested with me, and perhaps has something to do with building up the "shooting strength" in your arm... Don't know.

If you play lots of petanque, and on varied surfaces, and your own role may shift from pointer to shooter andback again - then yes, having two different sets: the classic shooter's set of smooth, light, larger boules - as well as the classic pointers (heavier, smaller, more striations) makes sense (just make sure you explain that sensability to your spouse when you're short a little shopping money that week!)
