The Carbon/Steel boules require a little more care than the stainless steel boules. The Carbon/Steel boules also develop a little bit of "rust" on the surface which many petanque players like since it helps with their grip.
Since shooters prefer smooth boules, then the carbon/steel boule surface with a slight bit of rust helps in pointing throws too.
BUT, some players prefer low-rebound qualities that SOFT and/or BRONZE boules offer.
