This is an attempt at making a good faq for the game of petanque. All questions that are directly related to the game and it's basic rules should be included here. The questions and answers are meant for beginners - so please keep it easy to understand for non-players.

The format of a game depends on the capacity that you have and that include: money, time, no of terrain, no of officials, the equipment and so on.
1st round
a) You can always play league of 4 and 5 teams in 8 group. For the first round or
b) you can play double knock out in group of 4 or 5. that will make up 8 group too.
2nd round
c) 2 best team of each group is placed in 4 new group of 4 team and again another league is played or
d) 2 best team of each group will play double knock out of 4 team in a group or
e) 2 best team of each group will play knock out of 16 teams. This way the game can end early.
3rd round
f) if you chose c or d, the best 2 teams from the each group will play knock out of 8 team.
To determine which team so be in which group, draws is done. If there are teams that should be seeded then this team is placed first.
for the second round, placing position is done by draws too. Consideration should be made not to placed the teams that are already in a group from previous round or for the case of e, the two teams that come from the same group have to be placed one in the upper group and the other in the lower group.
