Pools consist of preferably 4 teams, but may have 3 teams as well. The only reason to go to a 3-team pool would be if the number of teams is not a multiple of four. When 3-team pools are necessary, they should only be used in the minimum, that as many teams as possible should go into 4-team pools. All selection for the pools is done by random draw.
In a 4-team pool, the winners of the first two games face off in the second game, and the losers the same. The team that loses twice is out after two games, and the team that wins twice advances after two games. The 1-1 teams face off in a third game with the winner advancing. Two out of four teams advance.
In a 3-team pool, one team gets a BYE (which is like a win in a 4-team pool). The BYE team plays the winner of the first game. The winner of that game advances. The loser of the first game faces the loser of the second game. The loser of the third game is eliminated. Two out of three teams advance.
Once the pool play is complete, elimination brackets are set up. Current FPUSA guidelines call for each undefeated team to be paired off with 1-loss team from a different pool in the first round of the elimination playoff.

It is 7h30 I have slept only 4 hours and I am one of them. My team number is 207 and we are playing against V.Chavinat game 1581. I go to the games Office, get my playing pack (3 bags, 3 t-shirts , 3 bobs/soft sun hats, 3 chifonettes) and my playing card on which we will have to enter the score at the end of the first round and return it to the same office.
We just got word of a new petanque-game, for all of those of you with a PC. It's called "petank party", and looks quite unique...
