This month we celebrated a big number - 10 years
On 7 january 1998 petanque.org had it's first day on the internet. In those days virtually all domain names were available, but the .org ending was chosen because we where planning to build a user driven organisation - a site for ,and by petanque players.
Back then it was hard to make a web-site. Nothing was available that even resembles a CMS or a forum, all software had to be built from scratch. So we're quite unique - all the stuff that makes petanque.org tick is hand-made just for this site. Every single line of programming and every database table. We've never counted the hours, but it took more than a few nights..
In these 10 years the internet has evolved from a nice, small and friendly community to the worlds foremost commercial arena. But we try to stick to our principles: For players, by players.
We would like to thank everyone that has contributed over the years.
And please - keep the contributions coming. Without you we would not be here , virtually all content is user-contributed.
With luck we'll stick around to celebrate another 10 years in about , lets say, ten years?
petanque.org is actually one of the oldest user-driven websites on the internet today. When we started up in 1997 there was no plan, it all started with a group of web-designers and programmers that enjoyed drinking beer at the local pub. However we realized that drinking beer was not a good excuse to leave home at any given time, we needed a better plan. Or just simply a plan.
Every time you look at a webpage, the address of the page is remembered. Forever. And out most visited page in the last couple of months has not been about pastis, petanque, france or anything like that. Apparently you are all very interested in French fashion! And small furry animals..
As an outstanding popular game, the game of boules had his hour of glory at the beginning of the 20th century, at the same time as the photographic postcard. Through these amazing and particularly live snapshots, Yves Moreau proposes to depict the history of the game of boules.
Most Petanque players think that the game is all about how they throw their boule. After all, whoever lands their boule closest to the cochon is the person who’s going to pick up the most points. However, Petanque isn’t all about merely throwing boules since there is also a psychological aspect to the game.
